Incoming ONA Committee member Lara Mazzoni attended the Kensington and Chelsea over 50s Forum on Safety on February 24. The meeting covered community safety services for the borough. Priorities include tackling anti-social behaviour and making properties more secure from burglary (target hardening).  Some takeaways about the RBKC, types of crime, crime rates and more:

David Lindsay, the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, noted that the borough has some 60k visitors a day. Up to a million people attend the Notting Hill Carnival in the summer, which is also when pickpocketing cases are highest.

Elise Gallatley, Chief Inspector Neighbourhoods, reported that RBKC ranks 25th out of 32 London boroughs for ‘total notifiable offenses.’ It ranks 24th for anti-social behaviour and 19th for residential burglary, and 27th for homicide and sexual offences.

Lorna Platt, Senior Comment Safety Officer, noted that community wardens are on patrol every day from 7 am to 11 pm around the borough, excluding bank holidays.

Both Ms Gallatley and Chris Jolly, Senior Trading Officer, reminded attendees always to report all crimes. Jolly said that only 5 to 10 percent of scams and frauds, via phone calls, emails and texts, are reported by victims, which makes the crimes harder to combat.  He reminded that the HMRC will never call and rarely email; they almost always communicate by postal mail.

All non-emergency crimes are most easily reported online: https://www.met.police.uk/ro/report/

Paul Morgan, Senior Commander of the London Fire Brigade in North Kensington, directed attendees to this site for home fire safety advice:  https://www.london-fire.gov.uk/safety/the-home/home-fire-safety/home-fire-safety-checker-hfsc/
He noted that management companies are responsible for fire risk assessment and escape plans and need to have one in place for every building.
